I am sure by now that many seasoned windsurfers out there have seen a video, pics or read an article about the world class spot of Le Morne on the Island of Mauritius. Club Mistral is very proud to be at this spot offering the latest equipment and highest level of windsurfing instruction and rescue during opening hours for everyone using the spot.

Le Morne is a special place because it offers a range of conditions from the same launching spot. The sailing area is made up of a beautiful lagoon (great for freestyle and freeride sailing) which leads out to the reefs where the wave action is taking place. The two wave options open to guests of the windsurfing centre at Le Morne are 'Small Reef' the nearest break to the centre, 'Manawa' approx 1.5 Kilometres from the beach.

Small Reef

Small reef is a right breaking wave, the wave breaks towards the wind over a stone and sand bottom reef. With stronger winds the wave can become choppy so if its not crowded and you have the chance to wait for the right wave don't take the first one or two the ones later in the set are less bumpy. The Club Mistral windsurfing centre does allow guests to sail in this area. Small Reef is also great for surfing and SUP on windless days.

Manawa

Manawa is a dream wave, it breaks from the left going with the wind, its quite a slow wave but from beginner to expert its a dream. Looking back at the island while you wait for your waves gives you a chance to see a paradise island. Obviously being 1.5 kilometres out from the beach the club has a few rules that need to be followed but these will be explained when you arrive along with a detailed spot description and safety briefing.

Windsurfing Lessons and Coaching

With such a wide variety of conditions its hardly a surprise that Le Morne offers the perfect training ground for windsurfers at many levels. Here at the Club Mistral centre we have 4 qualified instructors to help and advise you. We can take you from your first steps to private one on one wave coaching in One Eye. private sessions in One Eye are only available to guests with private equipment..

Regular video coaching sessions are held on the spot including a free session conditions and teaching schedule allowing.

Windsurfing Rental

If you plan to visit Le Morne in Mauritius between April and December pre booking is highly recommended, the demand for the spot is high and to keep the quality in the centre numbers are restricted.

The pre booked rentals are offered the latest equipment we have onsite from Mistral Windsurfing and North Sails. The latest North wave sails are rigged on 75% Carbon RDM masts and the sails over 6 sqm are rigged on 100% North Platinum masts. The team prepare everything for you so no rigging is required, just get yourself ready, relax and collect your rigged equipment on the beach and head for the water. If you need to change equipment we keep a percentage not rented so you can change board sizes as well as sail sizes. Sails are not bookable obviously because non of us can predict the wind on the day.

Sailing times can be restricted due to low water in the lagoon sometimes only a few inches deep and this makes windsurfing impossible.

Safety

So to kill the myth that Club Mistral refuses wave access because it doesn't like its equipment in high surf here is the take on safety.

Club Mistral with more than six years on the spot and with a team that consists mostly of locals who have surfed Le Morne or grown up in families that make their living from the sea only restrict the spot to the lagoon or close it completely if it is not possible to navigate the boat outside the lagoon through the passes. Some days it is possible to go outside but it can take a lot of time upto 45 minutes and its very dangerous, depending on wind direction current and numbers of people. Le Morne in big South West swell something around 3.6 wth 15 period or more by windguru can be a death trap at worst and in best case require helicopter rescue for someone who has been taken outside the reef in very strong currents ranging 5 to 15knots.

The team love the waves and the Club is on a wave spot but as with everything there is balance between days when it is perfectly safe to be in mast high Manawa and days when even stepping in the lagoon is a huge risk. It's all a matter of common sense and respect for nature.

FLAGS ARE PUT UP ON THE FENCE AND IF YOU SEE A YELLOW FLAG ITS BEST NOT TO GO OUTSIDE BECAUSE WE EITHER CANT GET THERE OR WE WIL BE IN DANGER TRYING TO GET YOU IF YOU BREAK A MAST OR DEFLATE A KITE. ALL THE CURRENTS TAKE YOU OUT INTO THE INDIAN OCEAN SO BE RESPONSIBLE PLEASE !! ITS NOT JUST YOUR LIFE YOU RISK.

Fortunately the days we have very bad conditions are few compared to the days when its perfect so don't get the wrong idea just. Respect Nature and Enjoy the Spot.

Used Windsurfing Equipment For Sale

The Club Mistral windsurfing centre at Le Morne offers used equipnent for sale. We keep the centre stocked with the latest equipment from North Sails and Mistral Windsurfing so at certain times of the year we offer equipment that is being replaced for sale. The condition of the equipment is good and we will not sell anything that we feel is un-safe at the time you buy it. A team member will help you to choose the right kit and show you how it should be setup. If you are interested in used windsurfing equipment after ask at the centre. Prices are very competative compared to Europe.
